Not Core is run by 26 year old Melbourne artist Grace Shannon (or, 'Gici'), with a focus on one of a kind illustrative ceramics that are entirely inspired by Grace's personal experiences and memories visiting new places and taking in their surroundings. Grace has been selling artwork since 2011, when they were 11 years old, working mostly with graphite realism portraiture before eventually moving on to oil painting in early adulthood. Grace studied fine art at RMIT and continues to experiment with different mediums, however ceramics are what has allowed them to work full time as an artist.
Incredibly motivated by small details in our surroundings, things that are easily missed in nature, pieces of our world that allow us to exist in the manner that we do. You'll see these little pieces of the environment and our history on everyday functional ceramic items that are sold through Not Core. This is Grace's way to honour and remember what we are and why we are. Simply going for a walk around the block and seeing a neighbours lemon tree that has had gall wasps lay in its branches, a new set of ducks swimming together in the local lake, the snapdragons planted that are finally allowed to bloom now the plane trees have dropped their leaves and are allowing sun to reach them.
Motivated by the privilege of seeing the stories around us, and endlessly inspired to discover new ones in different places.
